Course Description
This course presents an overview of the history of electronic music from the late 19th century through the 1960s and introduces students to using electronic media for musical composition. Topics include electronic musical instruments/technology, new musical styles, the introduction of the synthesizer, the rise of mainstream electronic music, basic acoustics, fundamentals of audio recording, microphone selection/placement, and the basics of digital audio. In addition, students will analyze historically significant works from the experimental art music of the mid-20th century through the popular forms of the 1960s. They will also create original "sound design" projects.
