California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CalGETC)

Transition from IGETC and CSUGE Patterns to CalGETC

Starting in Fall 2025, California Community Colleges adopted the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CalGETC) as the single, standardized general education pattern for students transferring to the California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) systems. This transition simplifies transfer preparation by aligning previously separate pattern options—Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC, for UC and CSU) and California State University General Education (CSUGE for CSU only)—into one unified structure.

What is CalGETC?

CalGETC is designed to ensure students meet the lower-division general education requirements for transfer to CSU and UC campuses. It provides a well-rounded educational foundation, covering areas such as communication, quantitative and scientific reasoning, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and ethnic studies.

Key Changes to Note

  • IGETC and CSUGE Patterns will no longer be available to new students starting Fall 2025.

  • Students who began under IGETC or CSUGE patterns prior to Fall 2025 will have the option to complete their existing pattern or transition to CalGETC.

  • Students are encouraged to meet with a counselor to determine how these changes may affect their academic plan and transfer goals.

CalGETC Area Overview

CalGETC includes the following general education areas:

  • Area 1: English Communication

    • 1A: English Composition

    • 1B: Critical Thinking & Composition

Planning for a Successful Transfer

It is crucial for students to understand the CalGETC requirements and how they fit into their individual transfer plans. Course selection should be done in consultation with an academic counselor to ensure students stay on track for timely transfer and meet the requirements for their desired major and transfer institution.
