Course Description

An overview of the concepts of substance use, misuse, abuse, and dependence including their relevance to personal and community health. The biological/physiological, neurological, and psychological short and long-term effects of selected substances will be studied. Risk factors for substance abuse and dependence will be analyzed. Political, social, and economic factors involved in the supply and demand for drugs will be discussed. Government regulations of legal and illegal drugs will be covered. Treatment options for recovery and prevention will be reviewed, including recovery resources in the local community.
