Course Description
An introduction to Native Americans of the Salinas Valley. The course will provide students with an overview of the following Monterey County native peoples: the Ohlone, Costanoan, Esselen Nation, Salinan, Rumsen and Amah Mutsun, among others. Tracing the first European contact, and culminating in current efforts in protecting sacred sites from development projects, this course will not only introduce students to the local Native cultures but will expose them to opportunities to become involved in current movements led by our local Native American communities today.
