Course Description
The first semester of a one-year course in organic chemistry. Intended for majors in the natural sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pre-medicine, pre-dental, pre-veterinary, pre-pharmacy) and chemical engineering. Principles and concepts of organic chemistry: bonding, structure, structure elucidation using modern instrumental methods, nomenclature, stereochemistry, and reactions, reaction mechanisms, and synthesis of the following functional groups: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, alkyl halides, dienes, aromatic compounds, and selected biomolecules.Prerequisite: CHM-1B with a grade of "C" or better.
